The city of Boston is a juxtaposition in and of itself.  There is rich history that is evident in the Colonial style homes and churches, and there is the modern high-rise skyscrapers.  There is the urban hustle and bustle of the city life, made calm by the vast number of well manicured public gardens and parks.  There is the proper and genteel population that attends MIT and Harvard, and the blue collar hard working populations.

I first traveled to the city a few years ago, in 2004 to visit a friend.  I had no idea that I was traveling to the city during the final games of the of the World Series, and although the Red Sox were not playing in their home town, the city was packed with people wanting to be there to celebrate.  I was lucky and managed to find a hotel in Boston at the last minute, and although I do not follow baseball, it was an exciting time to be there.  It reminded me of my time in Chicago, when the White Sox won, as both the people of Boston and the people of Chicago, share the same proud feelings for their cities and for their baseball teams.

This proud character of Boston is shown in those beautiful parks and in the recent renovation and landscaping projects such as the Big Dig, and underground freeway system.  This makes visiting the city a wonderful experience, the modernization that involves the older historic buildings and sites.  Many cities in the country will simply tear down the old to bring in the new, but this is not the case with Boston.

Which is great as many of the “firsts” in the country are located here.  The first underground subway,  public library, public school system and public park…all of these are in Boston.  And although this is a city, it is also a college town.  The universities draw not only students, but intellectuals and artists of all disciplines, which gives the city an eclectic mix, and offers those traveling to the city a taste of it all.  From beer joints and family run restaurants, to art galleries and science museums the vibe of the city is one of tradition, mixed with modern trends. This juxtaposition makes it one of the most interesting destinations in the country.
